Berlin celebrates the centenary of the Bauhaus on its streets, at the festival centre and on a number of city rooftops. With an exhibition in shop windows along Kantstraße the history of Bauhaus will be explored. In addition there will be a wide-ranging programme of events which includes early-morning urban yoga classes.

Bauhaus week berlin 2019 will offer visitors the opportunity to explore and interact with Bauhaus design and architecture in outdoor venues throughout the city. The full week of events will be kicked off with the long night of museums and end with the Open Heritage Day, a day of special openings of monuments otherwise closed to the public, both of which will focus on Bauhaus and modernity. Another highpoint will be the opening of an anniversary exhibition organised by the Bauhaus Archive/Museum für Gestaltung entitled original bauhaus at Berlinische Galerie.

Let’s get ready for some window shopping of another kind altogether—along Kantstrasse to either side of Savignyplatz and on to Potsdamer Strasse! Here, where new design shops have taken their place alongside old established hardware stores, where urban life is lived in neighborhoods and pulses with all kinds of different rhythms, the bauhaus week presents the school’s history in showcase windows of retail storesand a window of the Staatsbibliothek—Preussischer Kulturbesitz, the statelibrary. In spectacular handcrafted collages made, the exhibition tells us the story of living and learning at the Bauhaus, of the various workshops and its protagonists, of the designs and the products that arose out of this progressive, workshop-based teaching.

What better way to start the day than with a deep breath and revitalizing stretching exercises above the rooftops of Berlin? The students of the Bauhaus already began their day this way 100 years ago. Take part in morning yoga on eight selected terraces and flat roofs across the city.

The heart of the bauhaus week berlin beats at the Ernst-Reuter-Platz! Its architecture will be a pavilion of dismantled window elements taken from the original Bauhaus building in Dessau. It will be located in the center of Ernst Reuter Platz inviting visitors to experience a hidden oasis amid the bustling Berlin traffic. This is where all the various activities cometogether and where many events take place. Come to the café and immerse yourself in the Bauhaus cosmos of our library. Enjoy along-forgotten city plaza!

Bauhaus — Practice — present

Under the moniker Bauhaus — Practice — Present (Bauhaus & contemporary practice), the school and its ideas will be examined in various satellites throughout the city: in museums, architectural offices, design studios, advertising agencies, printing workshops and typographers. Visitors will have the opportunity to listen to lectures, take part in workshops and enjoy other informative events, thus gaining further insights into the methods of contemporary creatives exploring the Bauhaus today.
